The Ice Factor is the National Centre for Ice Climbing for the UK and is the world’s biggest, and busiest, indoor ice wall.
At the time the ice factor was devised (1997) the next biggest indoor ice wall was 150 times smaller. This meant almost all design, architecture, construction, plant requirements and operating schedules were bespoke and one-off. This level of prototype development required the Ice Factor to liaise with the huge variety of disparate suppliers and manufacturers required to bring the Ice Factor from concept to reality. Preparing financial forecasts, trading figures and seasonality was no less problematic. However, the bulk of the business planning was conducted whilst Jamie Smith (MD and Founder) was completing his MBA at Strathclyde Graduate Business School. Jamie served 10 years in the Royal Air Force Engineering Wing before completing a degree in Pharmacology and taking a new career as a business manager in the life science industry. He twice won European Business Manager of the Year before becoming the youngest sales and marketing director in the British Healthcare Industry. A three-year stint as a Senior Account Director in a London Consultancy, lead to the formation of the ice factor.
