Retail Assistant

The Ice Factor Group is seeking applicants for the post of Retail Assistant, based at the iconic Ice Factor, Kinlochleven, Glencoe, Scotland.

Sitting in the heart of the Outdoor Capital of the UK, Ice Factor plays a key role in the Lochaber economy by attracting over 130,000 annual visitors.

The customer base is incredibly varied, ranging from family visitors seeking basic camping items through to guides, instructors and mountain rescue teams.

You should be an outdoor enthusiast with detailed knowledge of products and brands allied with a strong network of established relationships within the sector.

Your passion for retail should be self evident from your experience. You will be familiar with operating in a strong sales environment and thrive operating in an autonomous role. You will be expected to contribute to buying decisions, presentation and daily management of the physical and online stores.

The role will appeal to existing retail personnel looking for a more autonomous role with the ability to influence decision making.

Shared accommodation is available within the village of Kinlochleven.

As the Mountaineering Council’s National Centre for Ice Climbing and Regional Centre of Excellence for Mountain Sports, you will be joining a small team of dedicated professionals with a common love of the mountains.

Becoming an Instructor: What’s involved?

Despite the talk of mountains, courses and assessments,applicants need to appreciate, that the bulk of the work will be centre based.

Trainees will spend the first month shadowing fellow instructors. Throughout the centre manager will aim to provide you with the core skills for running the indoor sessions. There is an increasing level of responsibility as key milestones and internal training requirements are passed, culminating in you running your own sessions with clients.

The role is not just confined to instruction however. The centre operates a cafe, bar-bistro and outdoor gear shop. All members of the team will be rotated around the various depts. to the point where you can comfortably assist in any area of the facility.

The types of sessions that we run, can be clearly seen on the courses section of the website. All trainees are involved in the full range of courses. Where possible we will assist with time off/transport for getting log book hours, crag time and multi-pitch days. During our busy winter guiding season, there is normally the opportunity for getting out on the skills courses and winter mountaineering courses.
