This course is open to anyone with an interest in rock climbing, from beginner to experienced, our experienced instructors can tailor the experience to you and your group.

From our base in Kinlochleven, we are in the epi-centre of British Mountaineering, with an enormous variety of world class rock climbing in the immediate area.

Typical venues include Glen Nevis Polldubh Crags, The Ring Crags in Ardnamurchan and the stunning mountain routes in Glencoe. The course is structured with the aim of teaching participants the core climbing skills on a variety of rock climbs.

The course will run on an instructor-student ration of up to 1:6 ratio.  Private sessions can also be accommodated, allowing your instructor to focus specifically on your needs and ambitions.  The ratio for this is a maximum of 1:2.

The objective is to give you the necessary core skills and to provide an amazing, fun climbing experience for climbers of all ages and in the Highlands of Scotland.

Full Day Outdoor Rock Climbing

  • The full day course will take place at Poll Dubh Crags in Glen Nevis
  • Beginner to Experienced persons/ groups welcome
  • Minimum age: advisory age of 10+
  • Instructor – student ratio of up to 1:6 people.
  • £200 full day (7-8 hours)

1/2 Day (Morning) Outdoor Rock Climbing

  • The half day course will visit our local climbing venue Onich slabs
  • Beginner to Experienced persons/ groups welcome
  • Minimum age: advisory age of 10+
  • Instructor – student ratio of up to 1:6 people
  • £120 1/2 day (4 Hours)

1/2 Day (Afternoon) Outdoor Rock Climbing

  • The half day course will visit our local climbing venue Onich slabs
  • Beginner to Experienced persons/ groups welcome
  • Minimum age: advisory age of 10+
  • Instructor – student ratio of up to 1:6 people
  • £120 1/2 day (4 Hours)

FAQs

When?

Outdoor Rock Climbing Courses typically run from April to October. With mid-week and weekend dates available throughout.

Why Do It?

You may be a complete beginner or have gained experience of indoor rock climbing, but you now wish to progress on real rock. From our base near Glencoe, we are in the epi-centre of British Mountaineering, with some of the finest crag and mountain locations in the world on our doorstep.

Suitable For?

This course requires a good degree of maturity, normally only found in adults.

How Long?

We recommend a minimum of 2 days to provide you with essential skills, 5 days are ideal. That gives the opportunity of exploring the local area and being exposed to a wide variety of classic rock climbs.  Day and 1/2 day courses are also available.

Teaching, coaching and development

Instruction, Coaching and Development are provided by Ice Factor Ltd.

Our objectives include;

  • To provide training and tuition to the public in relation to mountain sports, including mountaineering, ice climbing, rock climbing, hill walking and other affiliated mountain sports.
  • To foster and develop amongst the public, skills in relation to mountain sports
  • To promote safety and awareness of mountain environments to the public
  • To provide education to the public in relation to mountain sports

Course Cost & Objectives

Prices are £180 per day for Private Guiding 

The course will extend participants rock climbing experience and enable them to enjoy the rich variety of rock climbing found in the West Highlands of Scotland. The course is structured with the aim of teaching participants the core climbing skills to be a competent second on a variety of rock climbs.

The course will run on a 1:2 ratio, allowing your instructor to focus specifically on your needs and ambitions.
The objective is to give you the necessary core skills including rope management, belaying (holding and lowering falls), anchor selection and protection, use of modern protection devices. Thereafter, progressing onto coaching your personal climbing skills, including movement on rock, psychological mindset of the climberâ techniques. Self protection skills including self protected abseil and prusikking.

What Else?

All technical equipment is provided. We recommend you buy your own harness and rock shoes. If you do not already own these items, they can be hired from Ice Factor. Please note students on courses qualify for a 15% discount off purchases in the shop.

Transportation – All students are required to arrive at the Ice Factor for 6pm the night before a course commences, in order for essential equipment check and briefing to be conducted. Please make your own way to the Ice Factor, Kinlochleven. There are regular buses from Glasgow/Edinburgh and Inverness, all of which have low cost flight options from a variety of destinations. Transport throughout your course will be provided by Ice Factor.

There is a sauna and steam room available for your use at the end of each course day.
